All About the Southwest
The Southwest region of the United States includes only four states: Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. These states have many things in common such as their geographic location. The Southwest is located in the central part of the southern United States. Some of the states even have borders along the country of Mexico. The largest city in this region is the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Other large cities in the area include: El Paso, Albuquerque, Tucson, and Mesa.
Climate
The Southwest United States has a hot desert climate with summer highs reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most months see very little rainfall or no rainfall at all. The rainy months in the Southwest are from July to September.
Famous Natural Features
One of the most famous landforms in the United States is located in the Southwest. The Grand Canyon is located in the state of Arizona. It is considered to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Another popular landform in the Southwest is the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande is a river that forms the natural border between the United States and Mexico. It stretches over 1,900 miles long.
Man-Made Attractions
The Alamo
The Alamo is the site of the Battle of the Alamo which occurred in February of 1835 where Texas fought for its independence from Mexico. A volunteer force of 200 Texan soldiers fought off the Mexican force of thousands for thirteen days in February of 1936. The Alamo is located in the city of San Antonio, Texas.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is a concrete dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. The Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931-1936. It crosses the border between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The Dam also provides a source of hydroelectric power.
Battleship Texas
Battleship Texas was the last of the battleships to participate in World War I and World War II. Battleship Texas was the first battleship memorial museum in the United States. It was created in 1948. At the time it was made in 1912, it was the fiercest machine in the entire world.
